The classic drift here is bait rigged to bounce along the bottom while the boat drifts with the tide across the deep water, and the technique simply doesn't work on slack water. Anglers here are usually chasing the strongest push of a tide cycle, not avoiding it.
The tarpon run peaks roughly May into June, when the pass can be genuinely crowded with boats drifting the same stretch of current, all timing the same tide. If you're coming for tarpon in season, expect company, and expect the best bite to cluster around the biggest tide swings near the new and full moon, when the current runs hardest.
Outside of peak tarpon season, the pass and the flats around Charlotte Harbor still fish well for snook and redfish, and those species respond to the same moving-water logic on a smaller scale. Bigger tide swings mean more current and more bait movement through the pass itself, smaller swings mean a gentler day better suited to the surrounding flats. Predictions for this page come from NOAA station 8725577, Port Boca Grande, at the southern end of Gasparilla Island where Charlotte Harbor meets the Gulf. That matters, because the obvious alternative sits in the wrong place. Station 8725667, Placida, is roughly seven miles up inside Gasparilla Sound, its gauge historically at the Coral Creek bridge on County Road 771. Water behind a barrier island fills and drains through the passes, so an inside-the-sound gauge lags the pass and shows a smaller swing.
The scale of that difference is worth knowing. Placida's mean tidal range is 0.82 ft with a great diurnal range of 1.41 ft, and its own predictions are derived from Punta Gorda (8725744) rather than measured locally. If you time the pass off an inside station, you are reading the wrong water at the wrong moment.
