Set your depth and hours, get your days.The bay's grass flats, off Weedon Island, around the Gandy Bridge, down toward Cockroach Bay, fish best on a moving tide that pulls bait off the structure, same as most flats fishing anywhere. Where Tampa differs from a tighter spot like Sarasota is scale: a falling tide that's still comfortable near the ship channel can already have the shallow flats further from the main bay running thin, so pick your spot with the stage of tide in mind, not just the time of day.
The Alafia and Hillsborough River mouths fish well on an outgoing tide, when bait and current funnel out of the rivers into the bay, snook and reds tend to stack up right at that mixing line. Further south, Cockroach Bay's backcountry is skinny enough that it's really a rising-tide-only spot for most boats, plan your trip around getting in on the push and out before it drops out from under you.
Because the bay is so spread out, the same tide stage can mean good fishing in one spot and a dead flat somewhere else twenty minutes away by boat. Bigger swings around the full and new moon push more water through the rivers and passes, which usually means a better bite but stronger current in tighter spots like Cockroach Bay. Smaller swings around the quarter moons are gentler and more forgiving if you're newer to reading the bay. The planner above will show you which days lean which way, but knowing your specific spot's personality still matters here more than it does on a smaller body of water.
Old Port Tampa (NOAA station 8726607) is a harmonic reference station with its own gauge at 27.858°N, 82.553°W, reporting real time water levels as part of NOAA's PORTS network. Predictions here are computed directly rather than derived from somewhere else.
It also has the largest tidal range of the three places covered here. Mean range is 1.73 ft and the great diurnal range is 2.48 ft, against 0.82 ft and 1.41 ft up in Gasparilla Sound. Mean higher high water sits at 2.48 ft above MLLW. More water moves through Tampa Bay on each tide, which means stronger current in the cuts and a bigger penalty for getting the timing wrong.
The gauge also records what weather can do. The highest astronomical tide ever predicted here is 3.31 ft. The highest level actually observed is 9.31 ft, on 27 September 2024. The lowest observed is -4.31 ft, on 29 September 2022. Both were hurricanes, and between them they span nearly fourteen feet against a predicted range of four and a half. That gap is the whole reason a tide prediction is a starting point rather than an answer.
